Geometric Wedding at The Harlow

Alex and I met at work. At the time, we were both working at a tech company in Lawrence, Kansas. I was the human resource coordinator and he was a software engineer. We had worked together for a year before we started talking. We are both shy, so our initial conversations consisted of hours spent on Facebook chat  When we finally went on a date, we both brought a friend. The date went really well, and our second date was the following day.

The most surprising thing about our new love was how immediate it was. After just a few weeks I remember calling my mom and sister saying, “You guys, this guy is totally the one I am going to marry!” Our relationship felt so right from the very first time we talked. It was also surprising how many random and unique things that we had in common. It just seemed meant to be.

On December 17th, 2014, I had my final review for my architecture studio. It is well known within the architecture student community that this day culminates in numerous alcoholic beverages. The morning of the 17th, Alex texted me asking that I not make any plans for the evening. I responded informing him that plans for this particular evening had been made back in August when the semester had started.

After surviving the day of presentations, I headed with a group of architecture friends to a local bar for a much-needed round of Tank 7s. Around the time Alex would be getting off work, I sent him a text message requesting a ride. He responded saying that he couldn’t pick me up but that I needed to come home. Somewhat unsure of what the message might mean, I showed the text to my younger sister, Allison. Allison took one look at the text and exclaimed, “Oh my gosh, he is going to propose!” I immediately started downing water to sober up as quickly as possible. 

Alex wasn’t home when I arrived from the bar. Convinced that a proposal was imminent, I took a minute to touch up my makeup. It was during this time that I checked my phone and Alex had sent me a link to a website. This is where the true fun began. The link led to a scavenger hunt web application that Alex had designed and built himself! It was composed of cryptic clues that related to different memories and places around Lawrence that we had shared together. I started answering the questions and soon began my adventure around the city. After solving the final clue, I made my way to a park where Alex was waiting.

At the park, there is a path that is lined on both sides with low intertwined trees. On this night the trees were wrapped in white Christmas lights. At the end of the magical tunnel of lights, Alex was smiling and waiting. I made it to the end, and he popped the question! I (obviously) said yes and it began to snow. It was the most perfect and magical proposal.
