Everyone is still trying to navigate the new world of pandemic wedding planning. Although the lockdowns and the major societal effects of COVID-19 seem to be in the rearview (hopefully indefinitely), there are still some residual aftershocks shaking up the industry. Consider these notes when you move forward in planning.
HIT THE GROUND RUNNING TO BOOK YOUR VENUE AND VENDORS.
There is a huge backlog of couples that have been patiently waiting out the pandemic storm that are now ready to finally set their wedding date. In addition to them, there are a lot of newly engaged couples who are ready to jump right in to planning. Combined, all those couples are looking at the wedding weekends on the calendar for 2022 and 2023.
Within the industry, there have been some businesses that have closed during the pandemic so there’s even a greater demand for top vendors. If you’re set on having your wedding in 2022 or 2023 and you have certain businesses in mind, contact them immediately and get a contract solidified.
UNDERSTAND PRODUCTION AND SHIPPING DELAYS TO PLAN ACCORDINGLY.
An important note to remember when wedding planning during a pandemic is that the wedding industry is not exempt from the production and shipping delays that have been seen worldwide. It’s going to take longer to get your bridal gown, bridesmaid dresses, and even flowers if they are coming from across seas, so set those vendor appointments early to ensure you get your items in time for the big day.
REVIEW CONTRACTS CAREFULLY.
Every wedding professional’s contract has changed since 2020. Make sure you understand cancellation and postponement policies, what’s due at what time, and what safety measures or requirements are now in place. This is pivotal to not getting your budget locked up in something you can’t use while wedding planning during a pandemic.
BE FLEXIBLE.
If there’s one thing the pandemic has taught us, it’s that sometimes things are truly out of our control! All across the world there are shortages or delays, and the wedding industry is no exception to the chaos. If your dream venue is booked, consider an off-peak wedding date (Friday or Sunday). If the paper you want for your invitation is out of stock, take a deep breath and pick something else. Being flexible may not get you exactly what you wanted but it could also turn out perfect in the end!
BE PATIENT.
If your wedding is months away and your photographer hasn’t responded to your email about wedding moments you want captured, know that they are taking things by priority. That goes for all your vendors! I promise they’ve not forgotten you, but the reality is they have procedures in place that allow their workflow to get done in a systematic way. With a year fully maxed with weddings and events, you might not hear back from them as fast as you hope.
HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER.
Now, more than ever, it’s wise to invest in a professional. A good, reputable wedding planner has her ear to the industry chatter. They know when it’s time to move on something or whether to hit the pause button for a minute. In the face of challenges, they’ll keep you grounded and work through a plan b and most importantly, they have the contacts and expertise to make it all happen.
ADD A LINE ITEM TO YOUR WEDDING BUDGET FOR MISCELLANEOUS THINGS.
I always suggest this, but it’s become especially important in the last few years where rules and mandates are constantly changing. It’s better to be prepared financially for any extra measures that need to be in place to protect your wedding.
IF YOUR WEDDING IS SET FOR 2023, RELAX A LITTLE.
Don’t jump on the scarcity bandwagon! Calendars are not fully booked for 2023, so there is no need to stress yourself out at the beginning of planning and rush to get it all done in 2022. Keep in mind, if your wedding is more than a year away, your ideas of colors and design may change during that time. The worst thing you can do is secure your rentals, flowers, etc., only to go back months later and repeat the entire process. Slow down and enjoy the journey!

Wedding planning during a pandemic doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. The engaged life is a fun and exciting life. Remember to take moments to relish in it! Trust in your vendor team and know that your wedding will be everything you want it to be.
